The Gelateria in KK

The Gelateria

I have lived in this neighbourhood for more than a year and never knew about the existence of this cafe until a colleague mentioned it. Tucked away in the middle of a side road behind the never-used multi-storey carpark in Kota Kemuning town centre, I would never have thought of venturing there if someone had not alerted me to it. I was given some good feedback about this place and armed with those positive thoughts, LL & I decided to give it a try a few weekends ago.

It's run by a Caucasian couple but on the night we were there, we only saw the "Mr" of that partnership and he was looking kinda flustered coming in and out of the kitchen. There was only one other occupied table besides us... so I thought we wouldn't have to wait too long for our food. How presumptuous can one get?!!

I liked their gay and cheerful placemats and the quirky pots of flowers on the table - every table had different types of rather unusual flowers. And their decor... uhmmm... how should I describe it? A mish-mash of eclectic tastes and stuff...
If you order their set meals, they come with a small glass of pandan drink, a scoop of gelato and coffee/tea. I was wondering what kinda "pandan drink" would be served ... until I saw this...

It's nothing more than just pandan flavour (tasted very artificial) added onto syrup water... thank god it wasn't colored artificially too!

Now their glass is really small, OK - LL finished his pandan drink in 2 gulps. No free refills... each additional glass of the same artificially-flavoured pandan water costs RM1.50... so please be pre-warned. Ohh... the same glass of plain water will cost you RM0.50 - thank you!

Next, the waitress put this plate in front of us...

... 2 small pieces from a french loaf, topped with miserly portions of chopped tomatoes & garlic. Hmmm... ok, so far the meal has not turned out to be very positive yet... except for the tablemats and flowers...

I ordered their Roast Chicken set (RM17.90)... and this was served after about 20 minutes...

It was a Half Chicken... but do note that the chicken is something like a spring chicken and it came resting on some slices of cooked potatoes - so that was what "German potatoes" meant (as stated in their menu). The small pitcher of sauce served with it - well, it's forgettable because I could not determine any flavour in that (although LL remarked that it tasted faintly of "bak kut teh"!!) Anyway, to give it some credit, the chicken was sufficiently marinated... meaning: it was not totally bland lah. And I suspect it's one of those frozen chickens from the supermart because the meat disintegrated with just a flick of the knife and fork.

I had finished my roast chicken and there was still no sign of poor LL's Lamb Steak. After reminding the waiter, his Lamb Steak (RM24.90) was served...

2 mini-sized pieces of lamb, the same German potatoes and a tablespoonful of coleslaw (goshh! how much would a little bit more coleslaw cost??). Worse still, when LL cut through the lamb, it was extremely rare inside! After waiting for more than 30 minutes, they served us uncooked lamb - sigh. So back into the kitchen the dish went... wait another 15 minutes plus another reminder, finally the same 2 pieces of lamb came back, this time it was more cooked but still with touches of pink in the meat. By this time our patience was really running thin and were in no mood for further confrontation.

We quickly asked for the scoop of gelato, downed our tea, paid the bill and left.

We should be smart like this boy here... just go there for the gelato lah...no need to eat and/or endure their other offerings!

Their gelato is smooth, creamy and not too sweet - just about the only saving grace of the place, I think!
My rating: 6/10 - only for the gelato!

aiyo, what a pathetic outing. i had an equally (if not worse) dining experience in one of those very promising HK char chan teng in Ipoh, only to be disappointed at the quality of the food.

worst nasi lemak, and fried rice ever.

nomad: ya la...those 2 pieces of bread were so miserable - not even a pinch of butter on them.

Pea: Hmmm... possible, hehe!

Derek: Maybe the service & quality levels had deteriorated over time.

J2Kfm: Ya, sometimes some places are over-rated. I also don't understand how some places can serve bad food and make a business out of it! That's like cheating ppl lah!

Hahaha! The pic of the bruschetta with the tiny amount of topping is like the funniest thing I've seen all day!! Hahaha! Thanks for the laugh, brightened up my afternoon!

I hope Kota Kemuning will come out with more eateries. Mid-range Western food is highly competitive in face of discerning value for money crowd. Not easy to survive.

Selba: LOL...ya, very pathetic huh?

550ml: You're welcome :-) That's why I didn't even call them "bruschetta" - they don't qualify!!

worldwindows: i think if you provide good-value-for-money and serve quality with sincerity, ppl will buy :-)

I witnessed the small pieces of bread last friday evening. The service was really lousy. Never seen a biz owner bragged so much about herself. The 'pandan tea' isnt a tea and yes it tasted really artificial. I enjoy nothing in this place...including the gelato. YIKES!!!

They had published a RM 30 for RM 60 voucher in Living Social recently.
I bought those and tried out this restaurant. Probably due to the voucher that I had, they charged me possibly the most expensive sausage platter and salmon (more pricey than TGIF and Chili's).
The lady owner took not less than 45 minutes to serve my first dish and another 20 minutes for the second. And I am the first to reach the restaurant at 645pm for dinner.
The spaghetti gelato is more pricey than BRobin.

Please think twice before going in.. Or have a thick skin face to ask for the price/menu.

I have same bad experience as the previous review. I bought the Living Social coupon as well, and I went there for lunch and dinner for few times. Everytime, the lady owner is trying to charge more and earn extra from us. And it took ages for her to serve a meal. From my feeling, all her interest is trying to earn more money from the customer only. After all, the food is so-so and doesn't worth the value and your time.

Oh dear, it looks like the service here has gone from bad to worse! Bad mistake on their part - if they can't provide a decent dining experience to their guests, there will never be any repeat customers & people will tell others about it.

DO NOT GO TO THIS CAFE!!! The lady boss (don’t know is Judy or Julie as she self intro herself when we walked in) has some mentally problem...Shouted and curse customers, and use vulnerable language to scold people. Serving time more than 1 hour, she has no staff as all her staff ran away because of her attitude. She said she is one woman show, do everything, from order, cook, serving and bill. I went dining with my friends using dealshelves coupon for Spagetti ice-cream (RM8). She scolded us for not making a reservation. She said she didn't put the plate in the freeze, vanilla flavour not enough, bla bla....Hello, in the coupon, it clearly stated that no reservation is required as it valid for walk-in customers. When told her that in the coupon stated no reservation required, her temper exploded and she shouted "WHATEVER LAH". We were the only customer that time, no other customer in her cafe. Really don't understand, what so difficult here? We were forced to upgrade the ice-cream to gold and selection flavour as she said dealshelves coupon is valid for vanilla flavour only, but that time she said her vanilla flavour ice-cream finished. However, we can see from her freeze that vanilla ice-cream is there. Actually in dealshelves coupon, it clearly stated that it valid for one premium flavour only. Talked to her about this and she fiercely scolded us saying we only pay for RM8, so what can we expect? This lady you really can't argue with her, you will lose. She really can become lawyer and she can talk non stop until you give up. So we have no choice but upgraded 5 plates of Spagetti ice-cream to gold selection. This lady like to disturb us when we happily chatting among our friends. She keep on interrupting us saying all nonsense thing (told us her family background, what her past job last time, how strong is her in her religious etc) until we do not have mood to sit longer and chit-chat. The worse part is when the bill came, we were shocked to see the price per ice-cream is about RM50++ after discounting with dealshelves coupon. There were 5 of us, the amount is about RM250++ for 5 plates of ice-cream. Asked her why so expensive, but she started making noise. She said her ice-cream is the best in the world, ingredient no 1, used fresh fruits, etc. Shit, it is more expensive than Baskin Robbins and Haagen Dazs. Tried talk nicely to her, but her mouth talked like a machine gun and used sarcastic words to scold us. She nagged for more than 10 minutes non-stop until we have no chance to talk. One of my girl friend (who is a soft-spoken girl) tried to talk nicely to her, but end up she scolded her until she cried. We lost in this battle. Five mouths also can't beat this one dictator iron lady mouth. At the end, we gave-up, paid the amount with unwilling heart and left and promised will not ever return to this cafe again even pay us money!!

I went with my family to this shop called Gelateria in Kota Kemuning. We bought a groupon.

When we arrived that shop, we gave her the groupon. The lady owner was the only one working there, no other helpers

While she was preparing the food, she started to complain that many people printed their groupons repeatedly to cheat her. She said many groupon people printed many copies and she wasn't happy.

She said she rather to have her place went empty. She quickly corrected " No... not empty. I have many quiet customers, who spent two to three hours eating, and paying RM300-RM400".

She also promoted other items on her menu, but apparently we were only interested to eat what we bought from groupon. We just had some chit-chat with her since she was such a friendly lady.

We bought two sets of gelato from groupon. The taste of the gelato were strange, and there were too much ice. The taste was not as good as we first thought. However, as it was from groupon, and the price was reasonable after the discount, we didn't complaint about that.

We definitely will not go there again. Other gelato shops could prepare that better than her. She was like doing one-woman-show.

Before we were about to go, she politely explained to us that she was going to charge us RM8 extra.

We asked why?

She said the one we ordered "NO MORE", so she prepared a SUPREME one for us.

We asked " We never asked you to do that, and before we ate, you should have informed us!"

She said " SO YOU ARE NOT GOING TO PAY?"

From a friendly and chatty lady, she turned into a mad and angry lady, as if we have owed her!

No wonder she had no customers!

I couldn't believe that we went into this strange shop and this weird lady!

I have gone to so many gelato shops, in terms of taste, this is the worst.

Most importantly, her attitude! How could she prepared something different from groupon vouchers we bought. She could have told us first. She didn't.

So, who is cheating now?

NEVER GO THERE AGAIN!!!
